Research symposium 2026 Submission Form

This is the submission template for the Research Symposium 2026 and must be used by all those interested in presenting their research ideas at the Symposium.

Please send all submissions to events@acem.org.au.

Please note that if your submission is accepted into the program, you must register for the event and acceptance of submissions into the program is contingent upon receipt of the registration fee. Those who submit the application must present the project.

Please note that submissions will be accepted for topics across the spectrum of emergency medicine practice, must be focused on patients experiencing medical emergencies as research participants and involve emergency medicine clinicians or researchers as leaders within the project team. The scope and design of the project could be a single-centre project or can involve multiple collaborating emergency departments.

When reviewing the submissions, reviewers will consider:

  1. Potential for multicentre research
  2. Junior investigator involvement and multidisciplinary involvement (medical, nursing, paramedicine and allied health)
  3. Research question(s) well described
  4. Research population well described
  5. Outcome measures described
  6. Research relevant to emergency medicine clinical practice

Criteria to be considered for breadth and suitability of research topics:

  • Population - geriatric, adult, paediatric

  • Existing research known to cover/be covering the topic

  • Type of study design - RCT, Other randomised trial design, cohort study, case control study, registry-based study

  • Intervention - drug, process, education procedure, other

The symposium will be open for submissions for presentations in three categories: 'Blue Sky', ‘Deep Blue’ and 'Beyond Blue'. All involve a short presentation of the project. Following this, an open floor discussion will take place with the objective of providing investigators constructive feedback relating to study design to maximise the likelihood of grant success or successful delivery of the study.

Blue Sky

This category showcases early-stage, visionary, or developing research concepts that have the potential to advance emergency medicine. Submissions may include novel ideas, proposals for new multicentre studies, or the expansion of existing single-centre or pilot projects.

Researchers are invited to present:

  • The background and rationale for the idea

  • Its potential impact on emergency medicine

  • Any early plans, preliminary work, or envisioned pathways for development

Presentation timings will be determined based on the stage and complexity of the research project.

Deep Blue

These are projects at a more advanced stage of development. There will be an established research team, well-developed protocol, projected sample size and number of sites and a clear timeline for obtaining funding and approvals if these are not yet in place. Recruitment may or may not have commenced. Presentation timings will be dependent on the stage of the research project.

Beyond Blue

These are completed research projects. Submissions should highlight key findings, methodologies, and the implications of the research for emergency medicine practice or policy. This format is designed to provide a snapshot of the research, facilitating rapid knowledge sharing and engagement. Presentation timings will be dependent on the stage of the research project.
