Immerse yourself in te ao Māori through this unique cultural experience on the stunning coastline of Kaiteriteri.
Date: Wednesday 25 March 2026
Time: 9.00am - 2.00pm NZDT
Venue: Waka Abel Tasman, Kaiteriteri -Sandy Bay Road, Kaiteriteri, Nelson 7197

This workshop will include 5 CPD hours and meet the requirements of culturally safe practice.
A bus has been organised to leave the Rutherford Hotel by 7.45am (to arrive at Kaiteriteri by 8.45am for a 9am start).
Once we reach Kaiteriteri, the day begins with a mihi whakatau (formal welcome) and whakawhanuangatanga (introductions in te reo Māori and learning the basic language), followed by learning tikanga – the cultural protocols that guide respect for the waka and environment.
After a karakia (blessing), participants will take to the water for an immersive exploration of Māori history and connection to place. As you paddle along the coastline, you’ll hear pūrākau (stories) of the region, learn the haka and its meaning, and experience the values of kotahitanga (unity) and whanaungatanga (connection) through shared paddling practice.
Depending on conditions, there may also be opportunities for in-water activities to further deepen your connection with the moana. The afternoon continues on the Pā site at Kaiteriteri, where participants will discover rongoā Māori (traditional Māori medicine) and taonga pūoro (Māori musical instruments), concluding with a reflection and poroaki (closing ceremony).
This workshop offers a rich, hands-on introduction to Māori culture, language, fostering understanding, connection, and respect for Aotearoa’s unique heritage.
